报告题目:Construction and performance of a 38 T resistive magnet at the HFML

      报告摘要

In 2011 we have presented the design of a 38 T resistive magnet with a 32 mm bore, which has been designed to satisfy the users’ demand for higher magnetic fields. Manufacturing of the parts started in 2012 and has been completed early 2013. I will present the final design specifications and report on the construction, commissioning and performance of the highly-performing magnet.

The five Florida-Bitter coils and outer Bitter coil of this magnet consume 20.5 MW at 40 kA and generate a magnetic field of 37.5 T, necessitating an upgrade of the power convertor to 40 kA up to 550 V. The outer coil has a diameter of 1 m and weighs just over 3,000 kg. Key ingredients in the design of this 40 T class magnet are the modified Weggel stacking scheme, the modifications to the cooling hole shape and new, compact housing.

I will also shortly introduce the installation for generating high magnetic fields at HFML and the recent completion of the far-infrared beamline.

Dr. Frans Wijnen, age 36, received his PhD from the Radboud University Nijmegen and has been working on the installation of a new (far)infrared free-electron laser source, also at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He has since joined the magnet technology team at HFML and is responsible for resistive magnet design, and operation of the installation(s).
