The Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HIPS-CAS) is a multidisciplinary research institute founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which consolidate the Hefei branch and four other institutes of CAS in 2003 according to the overall arrangement of the knowledge innovation project of CAS. After years of development, the CASHIPS has become an important base of CAS in scientific innovation, high technology development and talent cultivation. It has 10 research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics(AIOFM), the Institute of Plasma Physics(IPP), the Institute of Solid State Physics(ISSP)，Hefei Institute of Intelligent Machines(IIM), and High Magnetic Field Scientific Center(HMFS), the Institute of Technical Biology and Agricultural Engineering(ITBAE), the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology(IAMT) at Changzhou, the Center of Medical Physics &Technology(CMPT) and the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology(INEST),the institute of Applied Technology(IAT). It is located on a beautiful peninsula named “Science Island” in the western suburb of Hefei, the capital of Anhui province of China, covering an area of 2.65 square kilometers.
Among about 2450 staff, there are about 1859 scientific or technical personnel, 6 CAE Member, and 768 senior research scientists. In addition, about 1500 graduate students and 75 postdoctoral and visiting scholars study here. It has 21 well equipped laboratories and 10 large-scale technical physics facilities. They include 2 National Mega-Science facilities, 1 National and 3 Provincial R&D Engineering Centers and 13 CAS or Provincial Key Labs. HIPS-CAS has several technical service divisions including the Electromechanical Design and Manufacturing Center and the Library & Network Center. From 2002 to 2014, It was granted 17 national awards by China Government. Including “the First Prize of the State Science and Technology Awards", "Innovation team award", "the Second Prize for the National Natural Science Awards" ,"the Second Prize for National Tech & Invention Awards", "the Second Prize of the State Science and Technology Awards". Exclusive of these prizes, it still gained twenty-five top provincial awards, published more than 8467 papers in journals listed in Science Citation Index, and patented 1082 inventions.
Graduate education acts as a main channel of cultivating high-level innovative talents and a primary source of scientific research and knowledge innovation in HIPS-CAS. The history of graduate education can be traced back to 1981. From 1981 to present, it trained more than 4630 graduate students, including 1995 Doctor and 2635 Master.
HIPS-CAS is striving to meet the strategic needs of the nation, focusing on the forefronts of magnetically confined plasma research, global environment change, new materials, and new physical phenomena at extreme experimental conditions.
